Off-Season Storage Case for Stadium Camera Equipment

The Challenge
Contracted by the New York Mets’ new owner to redo all the audio/visual equipment throughout Citi Field, one production company purchased six new stationary in-field cameras to capture footage in the stadium — among other investments. With a high six-figure cost attached to each camera station, it was critical to ensure equipment could be safely and easily stored after being disassembled for the offseason. In an online search for custom ATA cases, the company came across the Cases By Source website and, encouraged by what they found, booked a meeting.
The Response

Providing the client with high-quality service began with the online calendar tool they used to schedule the initial call. Whereas some other case manufacturers use forms — which can result in slower response times — our calendar feature offers the ability to schedule a meeting with us directly from our website. Not only does this deliver immediate response, but it also gives clients the ability to schedule a consultation at their convenience.

On the initial virtual call, CBS was able to get a glimpse into Citi Field’s control room, as well as the stadium as a whole to see the ground-breaking enhancements the production company was making to the in-stadium experience. This first step in the discovery phase was followed by an on-site visit, where a CBS team (including the project’s design engineer) measured the camera equipment and met with the head camera operator to talk through the camera set up and what they wanted in a case. The head cameraman was also looped into the conversation to provide direction on what he liked and didn’t like about his setup — valuable user input that helped us to design the ideal case system for optimal usability.

From these conversations, we developed eighteen ATA cases, with three cases in each set: one for the camera and two for the lens. While the wheels enabled easy transport throughout the stadium, the use of caster cups on the top of case lids allowed for stackability to further simplify storage. The integration of branding elements on the exterior of the ATA case — from the blue and orange color scheme to the Mets classic, stenciled logo — gave it extra pop while the use of polyethylene foam on the case’s interior provided durable, lightweight protection for the valuable equipment.

The Solution

By making it a collaborative process from the start, we were able to produce a reliable, branded ATA case solution for the camera equipment that was delivered just in time for the offseason. Built with the end user’s needs in mind, camera operators were able to easily pack up the camera equipment after the final game of the season, with confidence they would be safe in storage and ready for the following year.
